Sleep Sweetly In This Quiet Room

Sleep sweetly in this quiet room,
O thou, whoe'er thou art,
And let no mournful yesterdays
Disturb thy peaceful heart;
Nor let tomorrow scare thy rest
With thoughts of coming ill,
Thy Maker is thy Changeless Friend,
His love surrounds thee still.
Forget thyself and all the world,
Put out each feverish light,
The stars are watching overhead
Sleep sweetly then. Good night.

- Victor Hugo?
- Ellen M. Huntington Gates?
- Unknown?

Whoever the author, beautiful sentiments.
I must read this more often and meditate on this before bedtimes.

Used this post to quickly copy and paste the poem that's in a frame near my grandmothers bed. The Author on the page attributes to "Dame Ann rich 1634". Hard to read the writing. Hope this helps!

My grandmother had this on her wall. Differences: MAR thy rest, and GARISH light. Also stars are SHINING overhead....

Love this poem and delighted to have tracked it down on the Internet! Lying in bed aged 5 or 6, in the 1940's, it was one of the first poems I ever memorised and I have never forgotten it.

I just found this poem framed in a Florentine Gold gilt frame. It says it was written by Dame Anne Rich, 1634. But I haven’t found another reference to her.
